Women who have genital herpes should be aware that there is a definite connection between cervical cancer and HPV. Worldwide tests have shown that cervical and HPV are definitely linked, and that herpes causes cervical cancer. Nobody knows why cervical cancer and HPV are linked, but there could be any one of a number of reasons, or any combination of reasons. One connection between cervical cancer and HPV could be that HPV breaks down the immune system so that the body is less able to fight off cancer. Cervical cancer and HPV could also be linked because the herpes lesions could provide an opening for the cancer virus, or because a sore that remains inflamed because it is subject to constant irritation can lead to cancer all by itself. Much as mouth sores of tobacco chewers may lead to cancer of the mouth, cervical cancer and HPV may be connected by the sores that erupt as part of an active case of herpes. If you are a woman who has genital herpes , be especially vigilant in having Pap smears and other tests that would rule out cervical cancer and HPV in your case.
